Archangel

These designs are based on the nine choirs of angels as proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and on the visions of Saint Hildegard of Bingen.
The design of the Archangels reflects their unique position within the nine choirs, their close contact with humanity and the role they play in the Incarnation. The design shows the Archangel’s reflection of Christ through the cross radiating from his face as well as the Archangel’s personal attributes. This particular image shows the archangel Michael, recognisable by his sword.
The Archangel’s body is anthropomorphic and thus indicates the Archangels’ close relationship with humans. It is, however, the least visible element of the design, as his closeness to humans is not the Archangel’s most distinctive feature.
Finally, the wings resemble a jet of flames and have a circular motion. They mimic a tornado of fire and enhance the Archangel’s unique status among the nine choirs.
