These designs are based on the nine choirs of angels as proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and on the visions of Saint Hildegard of Bingen.
Given that the mission of the Archangels is directly linked to the Incarnation, the fall of the rebellious Archangels must have been especially dramatic. Their design must reflect this. Thus, the fallen Archangels are marked in a special way.
For this purpose, the anthropomorphic body they showed themselves in as part of the heavenly armies has been twisted. The torso of the fallen Archangel is turned to one side and his hip to the opposite side. The hands have also been switched, so that the fallen Archangel’s thumbs are on the far side of his body. This distortion of the human anatomy allows the design to reflect in the fallen Archangel’s appearance the wrongness of his fall.
In addition to this, nothing but the bones of the Archangel’s wings are left. The demon also has horns made of black flame. The wings, horns and the black form give the fallen Archangel elements of a stereotypical demon, while deviating from this traditional imagery in the twistedness of his body.
