These designs are based on the nine choirs of angels as proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and on the visions of Saint Hildegard of Bingen.
The design of the Thrones is characterised by them radiating light, in accordance with the vision of St Hildegard of Bingen. The two extremities that make up their circular body resemble wings. According to the saint, they represent God’s justice and mercy. The shape is slightly reminiscent of the Taoist symbol of yin and yang. It also has an unintended but positive connotation; it resembles an eye, which is consistent with the fact that the Thrones reflect God’s judgement. This judgement is made possible through God’s omniscience, omniscience for which the eye is a most appropriate symbol.
