These designs are based on the nine choirs of angels as proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and on the visions of Saint Hildegard of Bingen.
The design of the Powers represents their battleready and victorious nature. The two side pillars imitate wings and their flames point upwards, to the Power’s source of strength. The central pillar imitates the pillar of fire that guided the Hebrews through the desert in their flight from Egypt. It turns and twists on itself, which lends dynamism and vitality to the figure. The upright posture and its fiery nature speak of the unconquerable character of the Powers.
